The Correct Size for iTunes Artwork in 2012

In case you missed it, iTunes is now insisting your podcast artwork is 1400 x 1400 pixels.

iTunes prefers square .jpg images that are at least 1400 x 1400 pixels, which is different than what is specified for the standard RSS image tag. In order for a podcast to be eligible for an iTunes Store feature, the accompanying image must be at least 1400 x 1400 pixels.”

The key line here, apart from the image specs, is “In order for a podcast to be eligible for an iTunes Store feature, the accompanying image must be at least 1400 x 1400 pixels”.

Do not underestimate the significance of this because you want your show to appear in the New & Noteworthy category; iTunes’ New & Noteworthy can send you a stack of traffic.

Apple periodically updates the podcasts they’re showcasing in this section and it’s essential you give yourself a shot of appearing here.

How to Update Your Artwork in Libsyn

To update the correct size to your artwork if you use your Libsyn RSS feed to notify iTunes (and all those other podcast directories) that you’ve released a show:

1) Login to Libsyn
2) Open up your show settings

3) Upload your new 1400 x 1400 artwork.

4) Sync your feed

5) Hit save

It took iTunes about 2 hours to update my new artwork.

Hi there,

What are the correct dimensions for the non-square albums in iTunes? eg. Celine Dion - Taking Chances, Damien Leith - Night of My Life, Crazy Frog - We Are the Champions, Amy Pearson - Don't Miss You EP, Ricky Lee - Can't Touch It, Hootie & the Blowfish - The Best of Hootie and the Blowfish.

Thanks,

Shelley

ShelleyPoole The only figure I've heard is 1400 x 1600 but I can't confirm this. The official word is that square is the preferred choice.

jonbuscall Thanks Jon. I'm having difficulty finding this info after a LOT of Googling. I'm wondering if Apple recently decided to phase this out.

jonbuscall 72 dpi, 96 dpi or 300 dpi?

ShelleyPoole As high as poss. Apple will only serve up featured shows, albums, etc, if the art work is high-res because of the number of people using tablets and retina products now.

jonbuscall wow. ok. I've got it at 300 dpi at the moment. Thanks so much for your help. Have a lovely day! (I think it must be day over in the US? It's midnight here in Australia.) : )

I'm an independent app developer (I make @MIDIdesigner) and I'm in the middle of having my app icon and splash redesigned (from meh to pro). This article didn't just change the final assets I was asking for, but also the artwork itself. If your design has to look good at 1400x1400... it changes what you're looking for. Thanks for writing and for sharing, and for having great SEO ;)
